This is the reason why disinfecting your shoes every day is essential. And it’s not enough to buy chemical solutions to achieve this goal. After using shoe cleaners, we also have a few methods you should try that will work wonders. Remember that experimenting is key to figuring out which works best for you and your needs.
Before utilizing any of the methods we teach, start the habit of removing your shoes from your doorstep. Then, use a shoe brush to remove all the dirt your footwear accumulated throughout your day. After you finish, wipe the sole of your shoe with a microfiber towel containing soapy water for 1 to 3 minutes or until the dirt is eliminated. Next, leave both shoes on a dry towel to give them time to dry. After they are dry, you can use the methods below to disinfect your sneakers and kill any remaining bacteria or microorganisms.
6 Ways to Disinfect Your Shoes
1. Use Sprays and Wipes
Traditional disinfectant sprays and wipes are okay, but if you have the funds, we recommend you buy the ones meant for footwear. Stick with using one wipe per shoe and never mix them. Whether you choose the spray or the disposable wipes, give your shoes 5 to 10 minutes so they can dry before putting them on again. Most products have more specific instructions on the label if you are feeling confused.
The one mistake people make with antibacterial sprays is that they only spray the shoes from the outside. You should also spray the inside of the shoe generously, and it should eliminate 99% of bacteria that cause warts.
Lastly, you can buy a sanitizing mat that helps disinfect the outside of your footwear. For 60 seconds, dip your shoes inside the soapy liquid. Afterward, you can place your shoes under the sun until fully dry.
2. Use Hydrogen Peroxide
Using hydrogen peroxide on your shoes is like killing two birds with one stone. It lets you kill bacteria with its 3% solution while removing any visible stains. This solution will not weaken the color of your shoe, and all you have to do is spray the sole of your shoe to get started. Then after 5 to 7 minutes, wipe off the remaining dirt and kill any microorganisms left.
Mix 70% hydrogen peroxide and 30% baking soda in a bowl to work on the upper area of your sneakers. Next, rub the mixture on the shoe, making sure to supply it with two extra layers. Lastly, wash the solution with cold water and lay the sneakers out to dry under the sun for 5 to 7 hours.
3. Use UV Shoe Sanitizers
Bacteria and viruses don’t stand a chance because UV rays kill nearly 98% of them off a pair of shoes within a few minutes. These products are safe for use and promoted by the American Podiatric Medical Association as highly effective at getting rid of warts. If you want to try UV Shoe sanitizers, the association recommends SteriShoe.
Unlike the first two methods, minimal effort is required when using shoe sanitizers. Simply put, put one sanitizer in each shoe, activate it for 1 hour, and you can put them back on after that. The only drawback is that the devices are not cheap.
4. Use Isopropyl alcohol
This method is ideal for leather shoes because this material is sensitive and easy to damage. Rubbing alcohol effectively kills 99% of germs and bacteria, and you don’t need much experience using it.
To start, mix 10 ounces of isopropyl alcohol with 3 ounces of tap water for 1 minute. Then grab a microfiber towel and soak it in the mixture for 30 seconds. Next, use your towel to thoroughly wipe the outside and inside of the shoes. All you need to do after that is give them 1 to 2 hours to dry.
5. Use Bleach
Bleach is a potent disinfectant for various household items, but if not used properly, your sneakers’ colors will never be the same. Therefore, we only suggest you use this method if you own white shoes.
You can get started by mixing 12 to 15 ounces of water with 3 to 4 ounces of bleach in a bowl. Then, put your towel in the mixture until it’s soaked, and start wiping your shoes from the inside and working your way back outside. When you finish, leave your sneakers to dry in a warm area for an hour.
6. Use Baking Soda and Vinegar
While not the best method on this list for eliminating bacteria, vinegar still restricts them from spreading. And baking soda kills bad smells and gets rid of fungal spores.
To begin, throw baking soda on the exterior and inside of your sneakers until it’s covered in white powder. Next, pour water and white vinegar into an empty spray bottle. The function of the water is to dilute the vinegar. Then you can spray your sneakers generously using a microfiber towel to wipe them clean in a circular motion. Once you are finished, let your shoes sit overnight for 8 to 12 hours or until dry before putting them back on again.
